New York City Legalizes Jaywalking to Address Enforcement Disparities

Jaywalking is now legal in New York City, allowing pedestrians to cross streets outside crosswalks. The law aims to reduce racial disparities in ticketing, as over 90% of jaywalking fines targeted Black and Latino communities. While pedestrians can cross freely, they must yield to traffic. The legislation became law in October 2024.
